Baltimore I: A City at War With Itself

Documentary edition · packet 03

An Exact and Authentic Narrative

This Federalist publication is both evidence and argument. Its depositions, letters, and survivor narratives document the violence while arranging that evidence to indict Republican government and defend the armed pressmen.

Excerpt

On the night of the 22d June, the office and entire printing apparatus of the Federal Republican was demolished by a Mob in Baltimore, in the presence of the Mayor, the Judge of the Criminal Court, and several other Magistrates and Police Officers, whose authority was not exerted to save it, and preserve the peace of the city.
Historical wording and forms retained where stated.
