Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee

1756–1818

Defender of the Federal Republican

The celebrated Revolutionary cavalry commander joined Hanson and other Federalists in Baltimore, was taken to jail under official protection, and was savagely beaten when the mob entered.

Why this record matters

Lee survived but never fully recovered. His suffering connects Revolutionary memory, violent party conflict, and the family history later overshadowed by his son Robert E. Lee.
