Oliver Hazard Perry

1785–1819

Commander at Lake Erie

Perry supervised the creation of an inland squadron and won the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813.

Why this record matters

The victory mattered not simply as a naval duel but because it forced the British evacuation of Detroit and made Harrison’s pursuit to the Thames possible.
